The Claire safety cabinet is used in laboratories with high security standards. With a closed shield design, a LED colour code that indicates security status, and a detection system for air turbulence, the cabinet is able to offer a high level of protection. The elimination of the use of plastic in production, a sensor for automatic switching to energy-saving mode when not in use, and the reduction of power from 500W to 85W and noise levels by 90 percent have all contributed to minimising the environmental impact.

Blattwerk Collection Original HELLER LEATHER

The upholstery leather from Heller Leder is tanned with olive leaves, in compliance with Blue Angel standards. This dispenses with the need for lacquers and dyes, and instead makes use of a resource-saving waste product from olive harvesting. Pre- and post-treatment is now harmless to health and pollution-free. After staining, the leathers are left in their natural, open pored state. The use of beeswax for protection enhances the appearance and feel. All leather types are characterised by an olive fragrance.

The deep space range includes sofas with optional integrated storage tables, chairs, stools and table. The sweeping shape is characterised by a lightly tapered back, curved armrests and a graceful base frame. The wood type, foot material and covers can all be customised according to customer needs. The plant-tanned, removable Oliva leather cover and the rugged design increase life expectancy and conserve resources.

E-FORCE, truck
E-FORCE ONE AG

The 18 tonne electric E-FORCE truck combines economic efficiency with practicality thanks to a high operating range. The electric drive, powered by renewable resources, is quieter and consumes one third of the energy of conventional diesel trucks. The long-lasting LiFEPO4 batteries are high-performing and recyclable. The purchase price amortises itself through lower operating costs. The vehicle is already part of the fleets at Coop and the Carlsberg Group.

Frosch recyclate initiative for packaging

This initiative is occupied with the production of transparent containers consisting of up to 40 percent PET from the Green Dot collection, recovery and recycling system. The containers are used for the Frosch brand of detergent. Here, for the first time, materials from the ‘yellow bag’ (light packaging recycling) are used for upcycling according to the Cradle-to-Cradle principle, which can be repeated as often as desired. High-quality reprocessing in a closed material cycle is reflected in the unchanged appearance of the Frosch bottles – in form, function and feel. The project is conceived as ‘open innovation’, namely that all market participants are invited to take part.

NeptuTherm® is an ecological insulating material made of 100% natural fibre – a waste product from the Mediterranean. The motion of the waves creates small grass balls from the wilted stems and leaves of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, which are washed up on the beach. Without requiring any chemical treatment, this can be turned into an insulating material that meets all legislative requirements. In the form of stuffing-, ballast- and blow-in wool, the insulation has a high heat storage capacity.

NIRA-ECO Sedum mat is fully compostable vegetation mat for the greening of roofs, walls, rail track spaces and gardens. The combination of roof greening plants, NIRA propagation substrate (peat-free) and compostable water storage mat (Ecogrow), derived from 100% renewable raw materials, gives an ecologically valuable vegetation mat that can be recycled in an eco-friendly manner.

RE/COVER stands for resilient floor coverings made using organic substances (bio polyols from castor and canola oil instead of petrochemical polyols, and without PVC and plasticisers). The overall aesthetic plays with impressions of authentic materials such as wood, stone or metal. On the second glance, the artistry of the decoration comes into play; a slight shimmer that suggests concrete and water surfaces. The floor coverings are easy to maintain, straightforward to install, durable, odourless, low-emission and recyclable.

Heavy metal-free ophthalmic lens manufacturing

In this production process for lens manufacturing, the heavy metal-containing alloy is replaced with an ecologically compatible adhesive. This connects the optical glass blanks with a newly developed material carrier that is made of plastic instead of aluminium. Neither process – connection nor separation – produces heavy metal-containing waste. The result: A higher standard of health protection for workers and reduced environmental impact during disposal.

Spar-Schnitt Panther Packaging GmbH & Co. KG

Spar-Schnitt is a secondary packaging for the beverage industry. The punched-out material of the side window serves as a fastening and the glued flaps provide up to 35% material savings through improved connection rigidity. This enables the secure packaging of bottles, Tetra Pak, gable-top cartons or cans. The reduced use of materials conserves resources, and the space saved in transport helps to cut emissions. The corrugated paper and glue are entirely plant-based and recyclable.

The cold cut plate is made using residual products from the veneer industry. The use of ash wood from the very centre of the log means that the boards are dimensionally stable and straight. Cut from a single piece, they are adhesive-free, durable and dishwasher-proof. As a design element, a tally list is burned into the front side as an indication of the board’s natural origins. This shows the number of annual rings, namely the individual age of the tree from which the wood was processed.

At the heart of the vosLED light bulb is an LED filament of hundreds of low-power micro-LEDs. In contrast to energy-saving lamps, these give out a warm light with a viewing angle of 340 degrees. The vosLED comes with all the advantages of classic light bulb. It is energy efficient and lighter than conventional bulbs, remains cool in operation, has a longer life, and does not contain mercury. The retrofit version is in keeping both with the style specifications and the lighting mood of the original.

The Eco Fashion Label wunderwerk dispenses almost entirely with petroleum-based raw materials such as nylon, acrylic and polyester. Instead, they make predominant use of raw materials from Germany and Europe that are certified according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards). Manual work takes the place of chemical processing; airbrush techniques and stonewashing replace bleaching with chlorine. Multiple overdyeing, batik and the cold dye treatment ‘maltinto’ (Italian for ‘badly dyed’) achieve colour and washout effects as well as a natural used look.

With the online game CO2-Kompass, Deutsche Bahn – one of the largest employers in Germany – is committing to raising awareness of the efficient use of resources among employees and company members. The playfully motivating approach of CO2-Kompass, in which users compete against each other, encourages participants save CO2 at home and in the office. Practical everyday tips, for example on the use of recycled paper or efficient heating, help to limit demand for CO2 and provide a gauge for activities.

Recycling search app eSchrott

Hellmann Process Management GmbH & Co. KG

The free app eSchrott makes disposing of old electrical appliances quick and easy. With an appealing and user-friendly design, the app accesses a national network of over 15,000 municipal and commercial collection sites, and points users to the nearest location. As well as weekly alerts about environmental issues, the app can be used to report illegal dumping of e-waste. This increases the collection rate of e-waste and promotes the recovery of important secondary raw materials.

Too good for the bin! – an initiative from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture – is aimed at reducing food waste. Initially launched as a media campaign, it is now continuing as an app. To motivate the public to throw away less of their food, the app lays out ten essential rules of behaviour, provides tips on storage and shelf life, and even has recipes for leftovers. Alongside this helpful information, the integrated shopping planner and a link-up to the website offers additional ease of use.

The Climate Market is a concept for environmental communication. This includes a cardboard market stall that is set up in local shopping centres. The design is both vexing and gravitating. On offer are virtual goods such as foodstuffs, clothing and travel. The act of purchasing proceeds in the form of pictures of the product, which are stamped on a cardboard shopping basket. At the checkout, the customer receives a receipt, in this case CO2-reducing courses of action for everyday life. The objective is a positive, experience-oriented communication of information about sustainable consumption.

Environmentally friendly utility vehicle

StreetScooter GmbH has developed a bespoke electric mobility concept especially for the Deutsche Post. This eco-friendly E-utility vehicle was developed with the specific requirements of the combined delivery service in mind (letters and parcels), including simulations aimed at reducing physical strain for the carrier. The lightweight construction keeps production costs low, while the modular system enables the production of different versions of the vehicle.

Algaemy is an analogue textile printer that produces its own colour pigments. The colour palette ranges from blue, green and brown tones, all the way to vibrant red. The variability of the colouration and surface are all a part of the aesthetic concept. In an autarchic cycle of production, Algaemy exploits the sustainable potential of a microalgae that binds to CO2. Although generally regarded as a weed in Europe, the microorganism exhibits filtering characteristics and can be fruitfully exploited as a renewable resource.

The Artificial Nature Project women’s wear collection is characterised by colourful, outlandishly high-fashion garments with elaborate surface structures and unusual lines. Central to the production process is the upcycling of residues and waste, including materials (old clothes and textiles, discarded plastic bags, transparent sleeves and covers) and dyes (onion, avocado peel, tea, woods). The design of the smaller pattern pieces allows leftovers to be refashioned and reprocessed.

In the sandwich material CONBOU, obliquely cut bamboo is interlaced and glued between two plates. The angled nature of the cut provides a larger gluing surface, while the diagonal structure gives greater stability. The cavity between the plates offers space for electrical cables and insulation. While using significantly less resources than solid sheets, the result is a highly resilient, lightweight composite material. Moreover, the use of renewable bamboo is resource-saving and cost-effective.

The Recto-Verso of Design

The term Recto-Verso (the front and back of a sheet of paper) is employed to symbolise the resource-saving content and objectives of this book: if both sides are printed, then only half of the paper is needed. The idea is founded the vision of the decoupling of lifestyle from increasing consumer demand – at the creative, economic and social levels. Emphasis is given to the shortening of supply chains and to non-material solutions such as product-sharing or self-sufficiency.

This modular kitchen equipment system is characterised by its ability to be dismantled and disassembled, a property that also makes it easy to repair. Cast-iron base elements and containers with unbreakably thick walls ensure durability, while interchangeable silicone seals enable (de)mounting by the user. This is in opposition to the trend of semi-disposable products that force customers to make new purchases in cases of even minor faults, if only because the casing cannot be disassembled.

LINK is an urban logistics system that uses the existing city infrastructure for sustainable freight distribution. This comprises a fleet of electric semi-autonomous transporters, among other aspects. In collection centres on the city outskirts, goods are sorted systematically according to region before being distributed in containers to neighbourhood storage facilities. This eliminates unnecessary journeys and shortens delivery distances. Further transportation to local merchants replaces lorries with an environmentally friendly means of transport.

The Ministry of Happiness and Wellbeing is a metaphorical multimedia communication campaign that grapples with the subject of happiness. Everyday and citizen-centred campaigns motivate people to rethink their assumptions as well as to act in a more sustainable manner. This concept takes the form of a Beuysian social sculpture, with a blend of mission consciousness, satire and utopia – without one-size-fits-all remedies or slogans. The objective is social change that moves towards awareness, reduction and contentedness; in short: Gross National Happiness.

MLKL is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective technique for the protection of habitats that are threatened by erosion. To stabilise the soil, compostable modules that incorporate seed capsules (from quick-rooting plants) are attached to eroding slopes in a form of netting. Shortly after, the growing roots provide support, while the modules degrade. The specific shape permits narrow or wide netting, depending on the degree of erosion. MLKL are produced using waste materials such as straw, manure, hair and foliage.

The inkjet printer counteracts the trend of decreasing quality in technical products (watchword: built-in obsolescence) through creative timelessness and technical durability. The quality standards in this case are interchangeable components with fewer moving parts that allow for repairs and upgrading. The function-oriented vertical design and intuitive operation give an extremely user-friendly device. Large inkwells do away with the need for frequent refilling.

RELO²P

The RELO²P project is occupied with the recultivation of a former open-cast mine in Lausitz into a productive landscape. Aided by microalgae cultures in the colliery water, CO2 from the nearby power plant is depleted and converted into biomass. In keeping with the principle of rotation, this biomass can then be used to extract biodiesel and electricity in the nearby biopower plant. Sustainable tourism is possible in the shore area, where information is provided on the generation of sustainable energy in the region.

SOLA Autarke Energie is a mobile system for autarchic energy and water supply during ecological expeditions. Consisting of a foldable solar textile, a removable battery and UV water-filtering technology, it can be used for the storage and conversion of solar energy, as well as UV-based water disinfection. Weighing only 800g, it can be deployed in a freely suspended state or lying flat. Disassembly and repair is straightforward, and the system can be reduced to a tenth of its size thanks to the folding mechanism.
