Winners 2015


A total of eight products and concepts were granted the 2015 German Federal Ecodesign Award. The ceremony took place in November at the Federal Environment Ministry in Berlin. Alongside President of the Federal Environment Agency, Maria Krautzberger, Federal Minister Barbara Hendricks gave an opening speech and presented the awards to the winners.



Product category


The Product competition category invites submissions of products that are available on the German market including products from all sectors and all areas of design. The following four products ultimately went on to win the award:


ENGEL SPORTS

ENGEL GmbH

The functional garments from the Engel Sports brand are made almost entirely using merino virgin wool and silk. No environmentally harmful substances or manufacturing processes are used along the entire value creation chain. The concept emphasises adherence to social standards, the avoidance of unnecessary transport, and animal welfare. The antibacterial properties of the wool-silk mixture naturally counteract odours, which in turn leads to savings in detergents over the lifetime of the garment.

Jury statement:
“Creating functional sportswear with merino wool — Engel Sports shows that it’s possible! Here, instead of synthetic fibres, a fine blend of wool and silk provides insulation and absorbs moisture without feeling clammy. The sourcing
of the wool is strictly controlled and rigorous consideration is given to animal welfare. Finally, a super-ecological alternative for the sportswear segment!” (Dr. Kirsten Brodde)


H tour bicycle trailer (Hinterher tour)

In just a few seconds, the H tour bike trailer can be transformed from trailer to handcart to travel trolley to luggage cart to cycle rickshaw to shopping companion – and can be stored away just as quickly. The trailer is suitable as a means of transport for both families and craftspeople, and helps to encourage a shift away from cars and towards bicycles. The chassis has a long service life and is fully recyclable, while parts replacement requires only a single tool.

Jury statement:
“The bike trailer is light, easily dismantled, robust, weatherproof, made to last, repairable and reduced to its essentials. It’s also modular and functional and can be stowed in a small space in seconds, or converted into a bike trailer, handcart or luggage cart. Extremely simple and intuitive. The individual components are solidly constructed and are all manufactured using appropriate materials. It makes an entirely natural, friendly and unobtrusive impression. All the criteria for a good product are absolutely fulfilled. Fantastic!” (Nicola Stattmann)


Eine-Welt-Solar-Kollektor

The Eine-Welt-Solar-Kollektor (‘One World Solar Collector’) was conceived as a low-cost solution for the global energy supply, making solar heat-based production of energy a matter of course. The low production costs make it of particular interest for emerging and developing countries. Unlike similar panels of metal and glass, which require high quantities of energy-intensive materials such as copper and aluminium, the Eine-Welt-Solar-Kollektor is made entirely of plastic.

Jury statement:
“Utilising the power of our sun is probably the most natural and easiest means of providing heat. What is more, there is no harm to the environment or climate. The Eine-Welt-Solarkollektor (‘One World Solar Collector’) consists largely of plastic instead of metals such as copper and aluminium, and thus offers a cost-effective and resource-saving alternative to conventional solar collectors. The cost advantages outweigh the slightly lower efficiency of this type of collector, in particular when used in emerging and developing countries.” (Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter)


FREITAG F-ABRIC

Following their iconic courier bags made from disused truck tarpaulins, the Freitag brothers are now producing durable work pants, work dresses, T-shirts, longsleeves and concept bags from hemp and flax. In terms of water consumption and transport routes, the life cycle assessment of the European bast fibres is significantly better than that of cotton. After being worn, the clothes can be biologically degraded without residues. The trouser buttons can be unscrewed and reused.

Jury statement:
“New concepts demand new ways of thinking as well as perfect communication. 20 years after its bag made from truck tarpaulin, the Freitag clothing collection creates another eco-design milestone. The collection, which is made using bast fibres, and even the manufacturing debris is compostable to 100%. The other materials are modularly connected and can be separated and recycled.” (Prof. em. Service category


The following project was ultimately granted the 2015 German Federal Ecodesign Award:


CoremanNet - A service for facilitating the circular economy
Robert Bosch GmbH / CoremanNet

Through an internationally established logistics network combined with an innovative IT solution, CoremanNet enables the systematic and effective recycling of used automobile parts. Promptly and in the appropriate quality, used parts are delivered to the respective reprocessing facilities, where they are repaired and refurbished. Replacement parts are not only less expensive than new parts for the end customer, but because they conserve raw materials, energy and CO2, they also help to protect the environment.

Jury statement:
“CoremanNet has established an international system for the collection, reconditioning and redeployment of used car parts. What convinced me about the service was how it closes material cycles and significantly saves resources. What is more, it is transferable to other sectors.” (Dr. Dietlinde Quack)



Concept category


The Concept competition category invites submissions from pioneering concepts, studies and pilot projects. The following project was ultimately granted the 2015 German Federal Ecodesign Award:


Radbahn U1
Team Radbahn Berlin

The Radbahn U1 project (‘Bicycle Path U1’) is working towards the realisation of Berlin first predominantly canopied bicycle path. The vision encompasses a 9 kilometre-long path from Bahnhof Zoo to Warschauer Brücke, connecting the districts of Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. The project will make travel by bike more enjoyable and safe, whilst reinforcing Berlin’s green credentials as a cycling city. Moreover, it is hoped to make a contribution to reductions in emissions – for adjacent neighbourhoods and beyond.

Jury statement:
“This project is a model example of how to recognise new potential in existing but untapped resources in urban areas, and how to integrate this into an eco-friendly overall approach. Radbahn U1 (‘Bicycle Path U1’) takes up a discourse on the appeal of cycling in urban traffic. In terms of ideas, this route is particularly necessary in Berlin.” Ferdinand Ulrich (on behalf of Prof. Dr. Erik Spiekermann)



Young Talent category


The Young Talent category is to be understood as a cross-section category for projects from all areas of design. A total of two projects in the Young Talent category went on to win the 2015 Federal Ecodesign Award. The awards in this category also include a cash prize of 1000 euros.


Bugs´Bunny
Carolin Schulze

10 kg of feed can produce 1 kg of beef – or 9 kg of insect meat. What might take some getting used to for western diets could indeed feed the world and reduce the negative impact of the livestock industry. Among the major advantages is the easy and simple process of insect husbandry. Bugs Bunny’s mealworm-based ‘meat loaf’ renders insect meat in a new form, making it almost indistinguishable from conventional meat.

Jury statement:
“This visionary pilot project greatly impressed the jury. The comprehension of design beyond the optimisation of individual subjects, but also as a discipline that helps solve the problems of civilisation, is a generalist approach. On the basis of insects, Carolin Schulze produces a mouldable material that is processed through a 3D food printer into known foodstuff forms, thereby conveying the insects into a new ‘state of aggregation’. Processing insects into food is known means of solving future world food problems – therefore, this forward-looking work can be considered exceedingly contemporary and trendsetting.” (Werner Aisslinger)


Offshore Cargo Management Concept

Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts And Design

The Offshore Cargo Management Concept is an efficient restructuring of international marine transport that combines research projects with technological advances. At the centre of the concept is the feeder ship. By distributing and dividing the transport chain, only these feeder ships, which are constructed using ultra-light metal, are active within the ports or harbours. The subsequent reduction in emissions and noise leads to an increase in the quality of life in port cities.

Jury statement:
“The Offshore Cargo Management Concept engages with an ecologically and economically sensitive issue in our global movement of goods: How can we expand maritime trade, maintain liveable port cities and at the same time use new resource- and energy-conserving transport systems? In a complex field, this concept unites technical and logistical innovation for the benefit of the environment. An outstanding student achievement.” (Dr. Thomas Holzmann)
